Care for the Golden Years

As pets age, their health needs change. At Legacy Veterinary Hospital, our senior pet care is designed to stay ahead of those changes through proactive screening, honest conversations, and a care plan that adapts as your pet’s needs evolve.

Focused Care for Aging Pets

Most dogs are considered seniors by age seven, and most cats by around nine. Because pets age faster than we do, conditions can develop and progress quickly. That’s why we recommend twice-yearly wellness exams for senior pets. More frequent visits give us a clearer picture of how your pet is doing and allow us to catch concerns early, when they’re most manageable.

Senior wellness visits include a thorough physical examination along with targeted diagnostic screening for conditions common in aging pets, including arthritis, kidney disease, endocrine disorders like diabetes and thyroid disease, and cognitive changes. Routine bloodwork helps us monitor organ function over time, enabling us to identify subtle shifts before they become serious problems.

Dental health is also an important part of senior care. Periodontal disease progresses more aggressively in older pets and can impact overall health, so dental evaluation is always part of the conversation.

Beyond diagnostics, we focus on keeping your senior pet comfortable and engaged. That may include pain management, mobility support, nutritional adjustments, or mental enrichment strategies, depending on your pet’s individual needs. We’ll work with you to build a plan that supports quality of life at every stage.
